Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are reminding people that a smoke alarm is only worth having if it works.

County Fire Officer and Chief Executive Steve McGuirk said: “We strongly advise people to test their smoke alarm every week – toxic smoke from a fire will affect your ability to breathe with just two to three breaths causing you to become unconscious – a working smoke alarm will give you the precious seconds to escape.”

Home Fire Safety Tips:

Smoke alarms should be checked on a weekly basis for functionality
Don’t leave candles unattended
Don’t be distracted when cooking
Plan your escape route
