When the snow clears, most of us will start to clean up our yards and plan for new landscaping and yard work. However, this is also the perfect time to check out your property and look for any sign of things that need to be repaired or improved.
Even some minor changes to your property can help protect your home and family and should not be ignored.
So, what are they? Where do you start to ensure everything is in good shape and performing as it should? You can create a checklist and make a note of every security feature you have that requires maintenance so that nothing is missed.
However, let's look at three key things to check as the weather warms up.
Aside from being aesthetically pleasing to passers-by, a clean and maintained exterior will help to provide protection to your home.
The winters in Canada can be harsh, so when things start to warm up, damage caused by ice and snow will soon begin to show. Check your fences, driveways, and paths leading to your front door for signs of wear. Cracks in the concrete or paint peeling on the fence to reveal rotting wood, and even splayed-out flower beds can cause problems.
Once addressed, it will make it harder for people to find a “weak spot” to enter your property and home.
Even smaller structures on the property should be checked. That shed in the backyard you hardly use and is in disrepair can house a potential suspect waiting for the perfect opportunity to break in. A stand-alone garage with peeling shingles can also lead to weak spots.
You should also check over windows, especially on the ground floor, and ensure the frame and sills are in good condition. Evidence of water leaks and mould also needs to be taken care of, not just for the structure's health but for the health of the people living inside too.
Give your door locks a good look over too, and ensure there are no signs of tampering or even just regular wear and tear from constant use. Consider upgrading the lock from a standard key to something more sophisticated, like a smart lock.
Examine your outdoor lights, making sure that ice and snow didn't get into the casing where it could cause an electrical fault or that the bulb has dimmed and needs replacing.
Keeping the landscape clean and in good repair is a great natural deterrent for would-be criminals looking for an easy target.
Floodlights, security cameras, motion detectors, window alarms, and doorbell cameras need attention, and spring is a great time to check them. Ice and cold weather can cause condensation to form inside the camera and light housing, so it's a great idea to wipe everything down to prevent this moisture from causing issues.
A clean lens or bulb will also allow for clever images and brighter lights, which potential suspects will want to avoid.
Repositioning cameras allow you to ensure you can still see the vulnerable areas on the property and might be extremely necessary if there have been any storms in your area.
You can then take the opportunity to check any wires leading from your cameras to the house for signs of tampering. Though generally detected by your security system or NVR, it's an excellent way to ensure you know whether anything requires addressing.
However, remember the inside of the property. Check the maintenance dates on your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries if needed. Give them a good wipe-down to remove any dust and dirt build-up so they can continue performing as they should. Security sensors should also be given the once over, to make sure that they are still in good working condition, such as your window sensors or motion detectors.
A home alarm system is the best way to keep you and your family safe. With so many options on the market, you can find one that gives you the peace of mind you need and fits your budget.
Whether it's smart thermostats allowing you to control the temperature when you are not there, to making sure that there are sensors on every possible door and window, individual codes for every member of the house, and cameras with night vision that upload to the cloud automatically, personalised security will do what you need.
